How Fuel Efficient Is the 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid AWD?

The 2026 Camry Hybrid AWD gives New Brunswick drivers all-wheel traction without a big fuel penalty. This piece lines up every grade’s fuel numbers so you can see what AWD costs at the pump and what it doesn’t.

Every 2026 Camry runs the same hybrid hardware, so the comparison is clean. The differences come down to drive layout and grade.

What the Numbers Mean

The front-wheel-drive SE and SE Upgrade set the benchmark at 5 L/100 km in the city, on the highway and combined. That is the lowest figure in the lineup.

Step up to AWD on the SE Upgrade, Nightshade or XLE and combined consumption reads 5.1 L/100 km. City is 5.1 and highway is 5.2. The gap to the FWD benchmark is 0.1 L/100 km combined, and 0.2 L/100 km on the highway.

That small gap buys you a lot. Toyota’s Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive adds an electric motor-generator to the rear axle. It sends torque front and rear in response to driving conditions, and it lifts net-combined output from 225 hp to 232 hp.

The XSE is the outlier. At 5.5 L/100 km in every column, it sits 0.4 L/100 km above the other AWD grades and 0.5 above the FWD benchmark. It also brings the sport-tuned suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels. If the lowest number matters most to you, the XSE is not where you will find it.

The Hybrid Hardware Behind Every Grade

All six grades share a 2.5 L four-cylinder engine paired with the fifth generation Toyota Hybrid System and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Hybrid hardware is standard on each grade, so you never pay extra to get it.

Front-wheel-drive grades make 225 hp. The AWD grades make 232 hp. You get that extra 7 hp and the added traction while combined consumption moves by a tenth of a litre on the SE Upgrade AWD, Nightshade and XLE.

Every grade also carries a 49 L fuel tank, so the fuel-stop rhythm depends on your consumption figure rather than on tank size.

Reading Efficiency by Shopper Need

If you want the lowest consumption number: the FWD SE and SE Upgrade post 5 L/100 km across the board. The SE rides on 16-inch alloy wheels, and the SE Upgrade adds 18-inch alloys and a moonroof.

If you want AWD without giving up much efficiency: the SE Upgrade AWD is the most direct step. It carries everything on the FWD SE Upgrade plus all-wheel drive, for 5.1 L/100 km combined. Fall and the months after it bring wet roads and slick mornings across New Brunswick, and this grade covers them while staying within 0.1 L/100 km of the benchmark.

If you want a look that stands out: the Nightshade starts from the SE Upgrade AWD and adds 19-inch black alloy wheels, black badging, black grille, spoiler and rocker details. It is offered in White, Supersonic Red and Midnight Black Metallic. Its consumption matches the SE Upgrade AWD at 5.1 L/100 km, so the styling costs no extra fuel on paper.

If you want a fully loaded cabin: the XLE AWD also posts 5.1 L/100 km. It adds a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch multimedia screen. It also brings leather seats with ventilation, a head-up display and a 9-speaker JBL audio system. That is the most equipment for the lowest AWD figure.

If you want sport character: the XSE offers the 19-inch alloys and the sport-tuned suspension, with the same premium equipment as the XLE. Its 5.5 L/100 km is the cost of that setup.

Real-World Factors That Move Your Numbers

The figures above are the benchmark for each grade. Your own results shift with your habits. Short trips, heavy traffic, cold temperatures, a loaded trunk and a heavy right foot all change the number you see on the dash.

Curb weight is one grade difference you can point to. The SE weighs 1,585 kg, the XLE 1,655 kg, the SE Upgrade AWD and Nightshade 1,645 kg, and the XSE 1,670 kg. Drive Mode Select is standard on every grade, with Sport, Eco and Normal modes, so you can steer your own consumption.

The Camry Hybrid AWD Is the Practical Answer

Across the 2026 Camry lineup, the AWD Camry Hybrid grades sit within 0.1 L/100 km of the front-wheel-drive benchmark on combined consumption, except the XSE at 5.5 L/100 km. You keep the hybrid system, the extra 7 hp and the rear-axle traction of Toyota’s on-demand AWD. The SE Upgrade AWD, Nightshade and XLE deliver it at 5.1 L/100 km.
